While I did try and enjoy 5e for a time when it was the new hotness, it never managed to grab me and fascinate me the way those Whitebox sessions did. Over the next few years I would run 32 sessions with these little rules, learning more about old school with the aid of such guides as Matt Finch's Old School Primer and the helpful discussion boards online. The little digest sized booklet I ordered was by a man named Finarvyn and was called "Swords & Wizardry: Whitebox." This was my introduction to both the OSR and to OD&D. I didn't come back around to it until I heard about the OSR online years later and became fascinated by what I was reading about OD&D and how someone had released a clone of it. The sort of misunderstandings that result from word-of-mouth rumor mongering among impressionable kids.Īs I grew up I remained a steady gamer but drifted away from D&D as it went in directions I didn't personally enjoy. In this pre-internet era of my home town, there were many rumors about the origins of D&D and I believed some pretty strange and unsubstantiated things, such as "D&D originally was only in magazine articles but they were all burned because people associated them with Satan". I first discovered D&D in the early nineties at my local elementary school, and the kids were largely using the Rules Cyclopedia for the majority of those sessions. OD&D as a concept was always a strange, out-of-reach thing for me as a kid growing up in the rural American South.
